May 9 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Dr. David Jamison will speak on the the history and  successful persistence from the historical perspective of maroon communities. Maroon is a term used by Europeans to describe Africans who successfully escaped from enslavement on plantations in European colonies. Many maroons established their own communities of freedom in defiance of efforts by Europeans to re-enslave community members. These communities often incorporated elements  of African and European cultures, such as what we see at Fort Mose.
