The discovery of a 1628 Timucua bilingual catechism: Its historical and linguistic value for contemporary scholarship.

In 2019, Timothy Johnson (Flagler College) discovered a previously unknown bilingual Timucua-Spanish catechism.  Since that time, the book has been an object of concentrated historical and linguistic investigation by Johnson and George Aaron Broadwell (University of Florida).  This talk is the first public presentation of the joint research results and details the structure of the book as well as key points in the historical and linguistic features that make it an invaluable contribution to the understanding of colonial Spanish evangelism among the Native people of North Florida.

This event will be held in the Virginia Room in the Ringhaver Student Center on the Flagler campus.
