Butler named it Butler Beach and opened it to African-Americans. It became the only stretch of beach between Daytona Beach and American Beach\, north of Jacksonville\, where African-Americans were allowed to enjoy the sand and the sea. Under its namesake’s direction\, Butler Beach continued to develop. \nHistory:  \n\n\n\nIn the early 1900s\, Frank B. Butler\, a young Black man\, moved to St. Augustine and settled in Lincolnville.\nIn 1927\, Butler purchased oceanfront property on Anastasia Island after becoming frustrated with Florida’s “whites only” beaches.\nIn 1964\, Butler Beach became a focal point of segregation as St. Augustine became a Civil Rights headline.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccess:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisitors can access Butler Beach through Frank B. Butler County Park.\nThe Mary Street Beach ramp takes drivers to the beach for a fee.\nUnpaved Gloria Avenue has free parking before the pay station.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nActivities: swimming\, sunbathing\, and biking.  \n\n\n\nBeach features: Dog friendly\, as long as the dog is leashed at all times\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:St. Augustine Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nJoin us as we celebrate the 2026 Herschel Shepard Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation\, Thursday\, May 7\, from 5:30p.m.-7:30p.m.\nThe St. Augustine Historical Society is proud to announce that Gordon J. “Gordie” Wilson has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Herschel Shepard Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. This distinguished honor recognizes individuals whose vision\, leadership\, and lifelong dedication have made an extraordinary impact on the preservation of St. Augustine’s historical legacy. \nFor more than three decades\, Gordie Wilson has served as Superintendent of the Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monuments\, two of the most iconic and significant historic sites in the United States. Under his stewardship\, millions of dollars were directed toward preservation projects\, including stabilization of the Castillo’s terreplein\, conservation of historic cannons\, and planning for the protection of the Castillo seawall. His leadership ensured that both the oldest masonry fort in the continental U.S. and Fort Matanzas’ 18th-century Spanish watchtower were preserved for the future. \nWilson’s career with the National Park Service spans more than 45 years\, during which he championed strategic preservation planning\, community partnerships\, and nationally recognized preservation initiatives. He established cooperative agreements with the University of Florida\, Florida National Guard\, and local organizations\, fostered collaborations with Tribal Historic Preservation Offices\, and ensured that preservation efforts reflected both historical integrity and cultural respect. \nBeyond his federal service\, Wilson’s contributions to St. Augustine’s civic life have been equally significant. He served as President of the St. Augustine Historical Society’s Board of Trustees\, chaired the Presidio Commission\, and served for over a decade on the City of St. Augustine Historic Preservation Advisory Committee. He was also appointed to the Congressionally authorized St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission. Through these roles\, he has worked tirelessly to safeguard and interpret St. Augustine’s historic fabric. \nThe Herschel Shepard Award\, established by the St. Augustine Historical Society\, honors the legacy of architect Herschel E. Shepard\, whose career exemplifies the highest standards of scholarship\, advocacy\, and preservation practice. \nIn the spirit of Shepard’s legacy\, Gordie Wilson’s extraordinary career reflects the very essence of this award—visionary leadership\, technical expertise\, and deep commitment to protecting St. Augustine’s historic resources. \nThe St. Augustine Historical Society congratulates Gordie Wilson on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his enduring service to the preservation of America’s oldest city.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:City of St. Augustine
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe first prisoners of war during the American Revolution were captured in Virginia and sent directly to St. Augustine. Why?\nWe know of the 3 signers of the Declaration of Independence who were incarcerated here\, but what of the other 2\,000 soldiers and sailors who sat out the war\, either imprisoned or on parole.\nCome hear Dr. Roger Smith discuss this little-understood topic of Americans held prisoner in British St. Augustine from 1775-1781.\nSt. Augustine History Festival \nThe St. Augustine History Festival was created and conceived by UFHSA (University of Florida Historic St. Augustine\, Inc.) for the purpose of generating excitement about the history of America’s oldest city. From May 6 – 10\, 2026\, the festival will showcase every era of St. Augustine’s long and storied past at over 30 Special Events and Historic Venues. \nHistoric Waterworks Building \nThe building was completed in 1898 as the first St. Augustine Waterworks Pumping Station and a rare example of a brick masonry structure in St. Augustine. Following its decommissioning in 1927\, the building was adapted to a community center\, which served the St. Augustine Art Association\, the Little Theatre\, and Camp Fire Girls from 1928 until 1964. From 1964 until 2005\, the building housed the St. Augustine Garden Club. In 2013\, the building was designated as a Local Historical Landmark\, and in 2014\, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beginning in 2015\, preservation efforts by the City removed non-historic additions and alterations\, and resulted in the restoration of original finishes and features. Grant funds from the Florida Division of Historical Resources contributed to the effort\, along with countless hours of dedicated work by architects\, construction crews\, craftspeople\, and City staff\, and the building was reopened. In 2022\, the St. Johns Cultural Council signed a lease to become the new tenants and breathe fresh life and activity into the building that they market as The Waterworks. \nFor a complete schedule and more information about the St. Augustine History Festival\, visit www.staugustinehistoryfestival.com.  For more information about the workshop and open house\, visit www.CityStAug.com/PreservationResources. \nQuestions about the workshop may be directed to the City of St. Augustine Historic Preservation Division by emailing harb@citystaug.com or contact Julie Courtney\, City of St. Augustine Historic Preservation Officer\, at 904.209.4283. \nFor media inquiries\, contact Melissa Wissel\, Communications Director\, at 904.293.3307 or via email at mwissel@citystaug.com. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Tolomato Cemetery Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nThe 2026 St. Augustine History Festival is more than academic talks and demonstrations. Historic Tolomato Cemetery will host a scavenger hunt within the cemetery grounds on Saturday\, May 9\, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It will be a great afternoon of good old-fashioned family fun as you search for clues to help you solve the puzzle of the hunt.\nTolomato Cemetery is one of the most historic locations in St. Augustine. It was in use as a cemetery from the 18th century until 1884. This beautiful space is the last resting place of some 1\,000 St. Augustinians\, including many people important to the history of Florida and the United States.  It is a distillation of St Augustine history in less than one acre\, starting with the First Spanish Period\, when Tolomato was a Franciscan mission\, and going through its use as a cemetery during the British Period and the Second Spanish Period and then on through Florida’s Territorial and early Statehood periods.\nBurials include people from Spain\, Cuba\, Ireland\, Minorca\, Italy\, Greece\, Africa\, Haiti\, France\, and the American South and Northeast. Graves of soldiers from both sides of the Civil War\, and even the burial place of a man important in the history of Cuba\, who may one day be declared a saint\, Fr. Felix Varela\, rest here.  There is no place in St Augustine that is a richer concentration of our city’s long history.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””] \nDr. David Jamison will speak on the the history and  successful persistence from the historical perspective of maroon communities. Maroon is a term used by Europeans to describe Africans who successfully escaped from enslavement on plantations in European colonies.
